Is Test-Optional really optional? What do Dallas Students need to know about SAT and ACT scores in college admissions?

While many colleges have adopted test-optional policies during the pandemic, SAT and ACT scores still play a significant role in college admissions, particularly for Dallas students aiming for competitive schools. Test-optional doesn’t mean test-blind. Test-optional is when schools don’t require scores but will accept them if an applicant submits them. Test-blind is when the school doesn’t require nor accept test scores completely.

Based on our experience, admissions officers use test scores as a deciding factor between similarly qualified candidates. Remember, there are hundreds of other candidates who are applying for a few limited spots, and there is a strong need to be differentiated. Strong scores can set your child’s application apart, especially if their GPA or extracurriculars are less robust. For Dallas students, preparing for these standardized tests can still provide a critical edge, especially when applying to out-of-state or elite institutions where competition is fierce.

At Cardinal Education, we recommend Dallas students consider taking the SAT or ACT to keep their options open and enhance their college applications. Our tailored test prep programs can help ensure your child achieves scores that will bolster their application, making them standout candidates even in a test-optional landscape.
